By Campbell Mattinson - The Winefront
Longhop Shiraz has fast established a reputation as one of
Australia's best value reds. This 2009 version is up there with
the best of them.
Dense colour, dense flavour, lakes of tannin
and a good, dry, long finish. Remarkable that this sells for $15.
Lovely clip of fresh, slippery, ceday oak (French and American)
matches beautifully to minty, blackberried, smoky fruit flavour.
There are some sweet, raisiny characters too, forming part of a
delicous parade. Very impressive wine. Rated: 92 Points

Into its fifth vintage, fruit
sourced from Gawler River vineyards grown in rich alluvial river
loam, Angle Vale region provides the old vine component sited in
the famous red clay over broken limestone while Bibaringa at an
altitude of 280 metres has vineyards clinging to thin windswept
soils perched on quartz outcrops. Whole berry open ferment,
hand plunged, basket pressed, 14 months in French and
American hogsheads, bottled unfiltered, what a beauty!

impressed by the '08, Campbell Mattinson
scored it 93 points and number 5 in best value reds under twenty

Campbell Mattinson review
Massive wine. Pitch - black colour. Rich
with syrupy flavours of coal, blackberry, tar and minerals and
full - on from the first attack of flavour to the last long, warm
finish. An epic wine. It has a good hit of tannin to, and wave
after wave of dark, concentrated fruitiness. Australia's most
powerful wine under $20.
93 Points

Gary Walsh review
It's slightly mentholated and packed with blackberries and
cherries, a little shake of pepper and some sexy vanillin 'catnip' oak - fragrant and tarry at once. Full bodied and mouth
enveloping. it combines plush dark fruit with a grainy grab of
ripe chewy tannin and a long (slightly) warm finish. The
complexity and satisfaction delivered here for the price is second
to none. Killer value.

LONGHOP 2005
OLD VINE RESERVE
CABERNET SAUVIGNON 65%
SHIRAZ 35%
ADELAIDE PLAINS
Longhop is a very Australian sounding
name and we have made a very Australian type of wine. Cabernet
Sauvignon and Shiraz, this was made from vines planted in the
1950s, which as fate would have it, escaped the vine pull scheme
of the '80s.Very low cropping and picked ripe, full of flavour and
only 160 dozen produced. The end result is a deeply concentrated,
complex, flavoursome wine to cellar for up to a decade and like
most things Australian, will only get better with age. This is
RESERVE quality, this is LONGHOP
We're drinking it now or cellar for 5-7 years.
